January is “unchain a dog month.” We’re just sayin’–life at the end of a chain or rope really bites. You’d hate it, I’d hate it, they hate it.
Visit these great nonprofit sites to learn more: Freedom Fences; Coalition to Unchain Dogs (they offer a video tutorial on how to build a fence); Unchain Your Dog; and Dogs Deserve Better.

New at our blog: “Bless the beasts and children: Violence, animals, and honesty.”
How can we have an honest discussion about societal violence without acknowledging the “normal” violence we accept as part of every day life–including the violence we literally consume? Find it here.

Raise a paw for safe trails! Here’s a happy holiday project for you and your companion dog or cat–whether you live in the rural wilds or the urban wilds. Check out our Other Nations December newsletter to learn how you and your animal companion can take a stand against trapping cruelty by sending a picture to Born Free USA’s “Safe Trails” photo gallery. Pictured at left is Luna raising a paw (well, not exactly, but certainly in spirit) in Sacramento. Is your state represented?!?

“There shouldn’t be any dogs killed, but there are 1 million trap nights out there, and the number of dogs killed is small. You can only do so much without outlawing everything.”~a Minnesota trapper responding to the trapping death of a six-year-old girl’s dog(story here)

We don’t suggest outlawing everything–but trapping is on our short list.

Clickherefor video showing what happens to some animals caught in snares. While most end in gruesome death, this one ends well–the Minnesota dog survives the ordeal. (Here’sanother horror story–this dog not so lucky.) Trapping is in full swing in Montana…beware.

Dogs and traps don’t mix. No, wait–ANY animal and traps don’t mix. While we work to rid America’s public land of cruel traps, none of us wants to stand by helplessly while our companion thrashes in pain (and possibly dies) as the “non-target victim” of a trapper. It behooves us to know how the #@$%! things work; see our November newsletter(updated with an additional video resource after subscribers received their notice) for resources that teach about the types of traps and how to release them. Also included: a link to your own state’s trapping regulations.

11/27: Sportsmen’sBill blocked by GOPon budget violation…read on for lead-poisoned birds of prey videos.

View four videos of lead-poisoned birds of prey (two bald eagles, one golden eagle, one condor) here, here, here, and here. But NRA champion Sen. Jon Tester of Montana isn’t concerned about America’s wildlife. Media report here; bill language here. Info on toxic lead: “Get the lead out.” Details on image at left, click here.

MISSOULA, MT SHRINE CIRCUS 2012 played to mobs of people on April 27 & 28 in Missoula. Twenty-four different individuals came out to peacefully hold signs in protest of the abusive conditions in which circus animals are trained, travel, and live. Our message reached thousands and was likely Missoula’s largest circus protest ever! We weathered intimidation, bullying, even a racial insult from both circus people and Shriners. Visit our blog for a report and our Circus Animal Exploitation page for resources.

Go ahead, have a laugh! Working for animals in a status quo that depends on exploiting them can get you down. What can there possibly be to laugh about? As a public service to animal activists, Other Nations joyfully connects you with vegan cartoonist Dan Piraro of “Bizarro” fame. Click for cartoons and yuk it up!

Empty Cages
“Being kind to animals is not enough. Avoiding cruelty is not enough. Housing animals in more comfortable, larger cages is not enough. Whether we exploit animals to eat, to wear, to entertain us, or to learn, the truth of animal rights requires empty cages, not larger cages.” ~Tom Regan
